For the vote
Once upon a time there were spaces that had no pictures. So a frame-builder was commissioned to delimit the space and then a painter to fill the frame. Often these spaces were altars and so the frames were correspondingly spectacular, and often more expensive than the painting. Not much has changed really, to this very day, even if we are meantime inclined to regard the frame merely as a functional accessory; no longer does the picture adapt to the frame, but the frame to the picture.
If an artist becomes insolvent today, then, unlike his works, frames he has in his possession are considered a calculable asset, or they can be exchanged in a quite archaic fashion. In this way, the digital photo-artist workshop Artificial Image has acquired a wall full of empty frames.

In order to fill the empty spaces for a period of two years at a time, we are inaugurating the Artificial Image Award (aia)1. Photographers are invited to fill and hang at least 15 of 25 different picture frames. The images are to be produced in perfect digital quality and in close cooperation with the expert Michael Maria Müller. One set (printer’s proofs) will first be exhibited – in the frames and in the framework of the 4th European Photography Month in Berlin in 2010 – and after that will remain in the rooms of Artificial Image; a second set (artist’s proofs) will go to the photographer (an edition of the works will be decided on jointly; ideally, such an edition gains recognition for both artist and printer).
The Jury
Conditions of Participation
For pre-selection by the jury only those works can be entered that are the result of essentially photographic processes. An exhibition concept and the envisaged allocation and arrangement of the pictures in the existing frames must be presented. A PDF can be downloaded and used as the basis for the exhibition design and entered with the concept.
The respective data may be sent in digital form only, if possible as a PDF or JPG.
Entries sent by post will not be taken into consideration.
By entering an exhibition concept, the sender declares that he owns all the rights on the photographs and that the rights of third parties are therefore not infringed. At the same time, the sender gives the competition organizer his/her consent that the works selected by the jury be publicized free of charge in the context of the competition. This involves in particular the presentation of (low resolution) data of the pre-selected works on the internet for the purposes of a public vote, and for documenting the competition once it is over. Further rights of use, especially a commercial exploitation by the organizer of the entered works, are expressly excluded.
Directly after being informed, but at the latest two weeks after the announcement of the award, the winner of the competition undertakes to provide the organizer with high resolution data, negatives and/or slides of the winning works for the purposes of processing the prints for exhibition within the context of the 4th European Photography Month in Berlin. The processing of the works can be done either in the presence of the artist or by sending approved proofs (test prints). As is customary, the final proofs approved for production remain in the possession of the printer and may by used, together with the signed printer’s proofs, for exhibitions and for documenting the work of the printer’s studio. A second identical set of the exhibition prints (artist’s proofs) will be presented to the artist and form part of the competition “prize money”.
By sending works to award2010 [at ]artificialimage.de the sender declares his/her agreement with the conditions of the competition. Final entry date is 31 July 2010.
We look forward to quality that is out of the frame, sorry, out of the ordinary!

- 1 The aia involves – equally archaically – advice on, and the production and presentation of the images. Based on the conviction that the photograph is not complete when it is taken, but that each image deserves the optimum format and demands the perfect material, we strive for an uncompromising end result at the level of the highest technical possibilities available.

Hello,
I would like to enter my work in the competition but don’t see a link to the frame pdf or formal application.
Can you please send me any application forms and the pdf?
Thank you,
Patryce Bak
To whom it may concern: I would like to enter the Artificial Image Award 2010, but was wondering how to do it. Is there an application form? And how can I get a pdf of the “frame?” Also, what it s the deadline?
Excellent idea!!!
I am interested in participating in the artificial image award 2010. I have some important questions:
- I downloaded your fixed empty frames in the given high resolution (file: aia_rahmen_wand_hi.gif). Is this the file that I suppose to fill with my photographic images? Should I keep the gif format for my proposal? Or jpeg?
- Can I change the order of the frames? Or should I keep them in your given order?
- Should I accompany my application with resume, publications, etc.?
- To which e-mail address should I send my proposal? Is this the right one? (award2010@artificialimage.de)
I am looking forward to hearing from you
All the best,
maria paschalidou
Dear Maria,
• now you can download a pdf with all the frame sizes
• of course, you can change the order
(and if you think they are too many, the quantity of the frames)
• there is no need to accompany your application
• please send your proposal to award2010 [at] artificialimage.de
Dear June-Kim,
• you don’t need any application form, just send your proposal to to award2010 [at] artificialimage.de
• please download the pdf with all the frame sizes here
• the deadline is july, 31th, 2010
best,
Michael
Hi Patryce,
• the link to the frame pdf is here…
• we don’t have a formal application, just send your suggestions to award2010 [at] artificialimage.de
Best,
Michael
Please send only your suggestions – that’s mean lores-files – to fill at least 15 of 25 of these frames. Please send your suggestions to award2010 [at] artificialimage.de
Michael
Hi there, I would like to participate to the competition but not sure how to enter, can I just send the images? One of them is the one that is on my website that is under construction.
Regards,
Romen Gouveia.
yes, Romen,
just send the pictures, but according to the frame sizes, please.
best,
Michael
Hi,
I wonder if you accept digital photography or not?
best,
Neda
Dear Neda,
yes, of course, we accept digital photographs!
Best,
Michael
can the orientation of the frames be altered (from horizontal to vertical or visa vera)?
Hello
i want to ask please:
is it good enough if i send you my website address to look at my work? are you going to choose from it?
thank you and all the best
Liat
Liat, we need your images in the relation and/or proportions to the frames. In other words: we need your concept for an exhibiton. So you will have a lot of work to do…
Michael
Yes, the orientation of the frames is your decicion
Best, Michael
Hi I would be interested in applying the award.
Just one question, If I choose 15 frames, do I have to put 15 images in them? can I put some text (printed text) and some images?
Thank you
and also can I use mount board (window) or the image size needs to be exactly the frame size?
Ting, YES, you can use a mountboard, a window or a white space around the image - only this “final size” has to be the frame size
best, Michael
Yes, Ting, you can put text in your work!
best (from laos), Michael
HELLO,
I STILL DON’T UNDERSTAND WHICH RESOLUTION IS REQUIRED
AND HOW EXACTLY CAN I CHANGE THE ORDER (OR IT WILL BE DONE IN CASE OF MY SELECTION LATER?)
THANK YOU
REGARDS
hello alex, you need exactly the resolution which is required to show your work on a website, so that the people can choose it if they like it: 72 ppi
regards, michael
